Zagreb, Croatia

A capital often skipped in favour of the coast, Zagreb is a lively, relaxed Central European city: a medieval upper town of colourful roofs and gas lamps, a lower town of Habsburg boulevards and cafés, markets full of red umbrellas and one of the best-loved Christmas markets in Europe.

Grič Tunnel

The WWII underground tunnel beneath the upper town, today a cool, scenic passage between the districts: a curious gem.

Best time by type of trip

Spring and autumn April-June, September-October

Mild weather for the upper town and terraces, markets and festivals, without the summer heat or the Advent crush.

Advent magic December

One of the best-loved Christmas markets in Europe; cold and a crowded centre in the evening, but a special atmosphere.

Summer in the city July-August

Terraces, concerts and open-air cinema; hot but lively evenings, with many Zagreb locals at the sea.

Did you know... Every evening a lamplighter still lights the gas lamps of the upper town (Grič) by hand.

Getting around

Car recommended: No — The centre (upper and lower town) is compact and largely pedestrian: it's walked, with the funicular to overcome the height difference. A car is useless in the centre; trams cover the rest very well.

The efficient ZET tram and bus network: a time ticket costs €0.53 (30 minutes), €0.93 (60 minutes) or €1.33 (90 minutes), with a day ticket at €4. It's best bought at kiosks or in an app as it costs more on board.

  • Buy your ticket at a kiosk (Tisak) or in an app: on board from the driver it costs more
  • To overcome the height difference between lower and upper town take the historic funicular, very short and scenic
  • The €4 day ticket is worth it if you expect several tram trips
  • For taxis use Bolt: you avoid the surcharges

Safety

  • Zagreb is a very safe city: the main risk is petty pickpocketing on trams and in crowds
  • During Advent (December) the centre is packed in the evening: normal care with your belongings
  • Use the funicular or the steps for the upper town: the climb is short but steep

Did you know... The Museum of Broken Relationships, born here, gathers objects from ended love stories donated from around the world: a unique idea that became an international phenomenon.
