Salzburg, Austria

Mozart's birthplace and the set of 'The Sound of Music', Salzburg is a baroque jewel set among the Alps: green domes, a medieval fortress ruling from above and alleys with wrought-iron signs. Compact, musical and elegant, it's the gateway to the Salzkammergut and its lakes.

Before you go

Recurring scams and local rules worth knowing before you arrive.

⚠ Scams to know

Overpriced 'Sound of Music' combined tickets and tours

low confidence

Around the Mozart and film sites, offers and vendors that inflate prices proliferate.

How to avoid it: Buy entries and tours from official channels and compare prices; many views (Mirabell, the old town) are seen for free on foot.

Pickpocketing in the tourist crowds

low confidence

On Getreidegasse, at the fortress and during the Festival or the markets, the crowds can attract pickpockets.

How to avoid it: Keep your belongings safe in the busiest spots and at the evening Christmas markets.

Tourist restaurants in the old town

low confidence

Some very central venues rely on passing trade with uneven quality and high prices.

How to avoid it: Move away from the main streets or cross the Salzach to the less touristy districts.

Best time by type of trip

Spring and early autumn May-June, September

Mild weather, gardens in bloom and a livable city without the crush and prices of the summer Festival.

Christmas magic December

One of Europe's oldest markets and the alpine holiday atmosphere; cold and evening crowds.

Summer of festivals July-August

The great Salzburg Festival and the Salzkammergut lakes within reach, but a full city and very pricey accommodation.

Did you know... The name comes from salt ('Salz'): the white gold mined in the nearby mountains made the fortune of the prince-archbishops and financed the UNESCO baroque centre.

Getting around

Car recommended: No — The old town is compact, pedestrian and a UNESCO site: it's all walkable in a few hours. A car is useless and parking in the centre is pricey; for the fortress there's the funicular.

A network of buses and trolleybuses (Obus): the hourly ticket for the central zone (city and airport) costs €2 and is also valid on regional trains within the city. Important: from 2026 tickets can no longer be bought from the driver on urban lines — buy them before boarding (in the app, at machines or tobacconists) to avoid fines.

  • Buy your ticket before boarding: from 2026 there are no more sales on board and checks fine those without a ticket
  • For the fortress use the funicular from the old town: quick and scenic
  • The UNESCO centre is walked: a few hours are enough for the main monuments
  • Use Salzburg as a base for the Salzkammergut lakes (Hallstatt, Wolfgangsee), reachable by train and bus

Safety

  • Salzburg is a very safe city: the main risk is petty pickpocketing in the tourist crowds
  • During the Festival (July-August) and the Christmas markets the city is packed and pricey: book well in advance
  • The alpine climate is changeable: bring a jacket even in summer

Did you know... Many scenes of 'The Sound of Music' were filmed here, from the Mirabell Gardens to Leopoldskron Palace.
