Munich, Germany

Munich is Bavaria in city form: historic beer halls where the stein always comes by the litre, Gothic spires next to neoclassical palaces, and in the heart of the Englischer Garten surfers riding an artificial wave year-round, snow or shine.

Before you go

Recurring scams and local rules worth knowing before you arrive.

⚠ Scams to know

The charity-petition scam

low confidence

Someone asks you to sign a petition for a charity and then presses for a cash donation; in some cases the signature is just a distraction for an accomplice picking pockets

How to avoid it: Don't stop to sign street petitions in crowded tourist spots, always keep your bag closed

Source

Fake officers asking to check your wallet or passport

low confidence

People posing as police ask to see your wallet to 'check for fake banknotes', then take cash or cards

How to avoid it: A real officer never asks you to hand over your wallet in the street; always ask for ID and, if in doubt, call the emergency number

Source

Taxis with no meter or lengthened routes

low confidence

Some unauthorized or dishonest drivers offer inflated fixed fares or take longer routes than needed, especially from the airport

How to avoid it: Always ask for the meter to be on, or book via reliable apps; check the suggested route on a map during the trip

Source

Inflated bills in tourist-area restaurants

low confidence

Some venues near Marienplatz and the main sights add unordered items or serve portions/ingredients different from advertised

How to avoid it: Always ask for the menu with prices before sitting down, check recent reviews and request an itemized bill at the end

⚖ Laws & penalties

Green sticker (Umweltplakette) required to drive in the Umweltzone

high riskverified

The whole area within the Mittlerer Ring is a low emission zone; since 1 February 2023 diesel vehicles below the Euro 5 standard are banned; without a valid green sticker the fine is a fixed €80

Source

Increased fare for travelling without a valid ticket on MVV transport

medium riskverified

A €60 increased fare if checked without a valid ticket; reduced to €7 if within 14 days you prove you held a valid personal ticket at the time of the check

Ban on drinking alcohol in the central station (Hauptbahnhof) area and on public transport

medium riskverified

At the Hauptbahnhof a ban on consuming and even just carrying alcohol applies 24/7, extended to the station forecourt and surrounding streets (Bayerstraße and Arnulfstraße up to the Paul-Heyse-Unterführung). The City Council has extended it to 30 April 2028; enforced by police and the municipal service (KAD). Drinking alcohol is also banned on board MVG public transport.

Surfing the Eisbach allowed only for experienced surfers and with safety rules

medium riskverified

After the fatal accident of April 2025, surfing the Eisbach wave had been suspended, but it reopened in May 2026 under a new municipal ordinance: it's allowed only for experienced river surfers, at their own risk, until 10pm and with a mandatory quick-release safety leash (to avoid getting trapped underwater).

General alcohol ban for under-16s, beer/wine tolerated from 16

low risklow confidence

German alcohol law allows beer and wine from 16 with an adult present; spirits only from 18; venues and beer gardens ask for ID from young-looking people

Best time by type of trip

Culture and city on foot April-May, June

Mild weather, parks in bloom (the Westpark rose garden) and fewer crowds than at the height of summer and the Oktoberfest.

Beer and popular festivity September-October (Oktoberfest)

The most iconic time to experience Bavarian beer culture, though with much higher prices and crowds.

Christmas atmosphere Late November-December

Christmas markets at Marienplatz and across the city, with a particularly well-tended Bavarian atmosphere.

Did you know... The Oktoberfest, despite the name, almost always starts in September: in 2026 it runs from 19 September to 4 October on the Theresienwiese.

Getting around

Car recommended: No — The whole area within the Mittlerer Ring is an Umweltzone: since 2023 diesels below Euro 5 are banned and a green Umweltplakette sticker is required to drive anyway; a fixed €80 fine for entering without a valid sticker.

An integrated network of U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus run by MVV; the old town is entirely pedestrian and walkable, with the metro useful for moving between districts and to/from the airport.

  • Always validate your ticket before travelling: plain-clothes inspectors check regularly and don't distinguish tourists
  • For Munich airport you need a ticket covering the outer zones too, pricier than the urban one
  • Walk or cycle for the old town, it's quicker than the metro on short trips
  • Mind the alcohol ban in the central station (Hauptbahnhof) area and on public transport

Safety

  • Munich is considered one of the safest cities in Europe: the main risk for tourists is pickpocketing in crowded places, not violence
  • Avoid walking alone through the Bahnhofsviertel late at night
  • Always keep your bag closed and in front of you in markets and crowded tourist spots
